The Endocannabinoid System Is a system within all of us, including our furry friends. It is a series of physiological processes that work to maintain balance at the cellular level. This system is present throughout our entire body including our tissue, organs, and brain. Our bodies and cells actually have cannabinoid receptors, which are a class of cell membrane receptors in the G protein-coupled receptor super family. These receptors are part of the body’s ability to give us feedback in case our bodies get off balance and homeostasis is disrupted.
Homeostasis basically is the maintenance of a stable internal environment, despite what happens outside of the body. Homeostasis is important so our bodies can maintain optimal performance. Sometimes we get feedback from our body in the form of emotions or physical symptoms like a tightness in our gut or a content feeling that everything is just right.
Our bodies don’t like to be too hot or too cold, for example, or have blood sugar levels that are too high or too low. As a result we might experience a headache or a realization that we don’t feel just right. CBD can help us relax and pay attention to our body’s messages which can help us maintain homeostasis.
